HereWeGrow is a non-profit funding organization based in Hamburg, Germany, dedicated to enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder coffee farmers and their families.

We support evidence-backed interventions in Ethiopia and Uganda as well as at sector level.

We are committed to finding the most effective support services for our target group and constantly test, evaluate and improve existing approaches.

By actively sharing lessons learned with the sector, we aim at widening our impact beyond our scope of work.


We are currently looking for a Project Controlling & Compliance Manager (f/m/d) to join our impact-driven team who will help ensure our funding is used efficiently, responsibly, and in service of our mission.

Your area of responsibility:


As Project Controlling & Compliance Manager at HereWeGrow (HWG), you will play a crucial role in ensuring that our funds are used both efficiently and responsibly.

Your work will directly contribute to maximizing our impact: by helping us make informed financial decisions, safeguard compliance, and improve our internal systems.


You will report to our Country Leads who are managing our project portfolio and the management team and collaborate with external auditors and our accounting department.

Key responsibilities:

  • Project financial controlling 
  • oDevelop and maintain a cross-portfolio controlling structure


    oReview financial set-up of project proposals


    oVerify financial reports against budgets, contracts, and donor regulations


    oFlag variances, risks and compliance issues


    oOversee budget tracking, forecasting and invoicing

  • Audit management 
  • oCommission and coordinate external financial, compliance and safeguarding audits


    oEnsure timely resolution of findings in coordination with Country Leads and managemen

  • Data quality & reporting
  • oEnsure completeness and consistency of financial data


    oMaintain and improve financial databases and dashboards (Reframe, Power BI)


    oAnalyze and consolidate project-level financial data into organizational KPIs for internal and external reporting, including board report

  • Professionalization & innovation
  • oImprove and standardize HWG’s financial, compliance, and reporting requirements for project partners


    oAdjust internal frameworks to cater for innovative approaches (e.g., Social Return on Investment, outcome-based financing)


    oInform and support team members and partners in meeting new requirements


    Note: Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning-data is handled by our MEL colleagues.

    For whom we are looking for:

  • Degree in finance, accounting, business administration or related field

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in project controlling or grant management, preferably in NGOs, foundations or international development cooperation

  • Strong knowledge of compliance and accountability requirements in the non-profit/ development sector

  • Proven track record managing financial or compliance audits 

  • Analytical mindset, attention to detail and reliable, structured working style

  • Effective communicator, comfortable collaborating across cultures and functions

  • Self-starter who thrives in a small, dynamic organization

  • Interest in rural development and evidence-based work

  • Openness to travel to project countries from time to time

  • Valid work permit for Germany

  • Fluency in English; basic German is a plus
