The PhoenixD Cluster of Excellence is a broad-based initiative aimed at redefining the design and manufacturing of optical systems.

It is based on the interweaving of optical design, optical simulation, new material concepts, and modern production methods into a single integrated platform.

This platform can be used to design and manufacture customized, highly functional precision optical systems.

PhoenixD answers the key scientific question of how future optical systems can be produced while balancing the necessary precision, degree of integration, individuality of resource consumption, and costs.

This holistic approach by PhoenixD delivers new, customized solutions for a wide range of societal challenges.


The Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry together with the Cluster of Excellence PhoenixD welcomes applications for the following position starting earlierst January 2026: PhD Position in the Computational Chemistry (salary scale 13 TV-L, 66,67 %)


The fixed-term position is for a duration of 36 months.

The position will be located in the Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry.


Your role

  • You will guide the development of optical materials.
  • You will be responsible for the systematic extension of the molecular fragmentation schemes to periodic systems.
  • You will extent the in-house python-based fragmentation library for fragmentation schemes.

  • You will act as teaching assistant in different courses of physical and/or computational chemistry.
  • Who are we looking for?


    The successful candidate must hold a university science degree in Chemistry, Physics, or a related field.


    In addition, we are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Ideally, the candidate has a background in Theoretical and/or Computational Chemistry combined with knowledge in Materials Chemistry.
  • The candidate must be fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Experiences with quantum-chemical software, high-performance computing, and Linux operating systems are desired.
  • (Basic) programming skills in Python or other languages are beneficial.
