Job description


In cooperation with the Chair for Laser Technology at RWTH LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the ‘Laser Powder Bed Fusion’ department on surface technology and shape ablation.


Modern laser processes such as selective laser-induced etching (SLE) are used to produce high-precision glass components for the semiconductor industry, medical technology or quantum technology with detailed dimensions <1 µm.

Extremely high light intensities are achieved by strongly focussing ultra-short pulsed laser radiation, which triggers non-linear absorption mechanisms and enables the processing of transparent materials.

Current research projects are focussing in particular on crystalline materials such as sapphire, which are attractive for many applications, including in the field of quantum technology, due to their hardness and thermal conductivity.

However, the underlying absorption mechanisms of laser radiation in sapphire are still poorly understood.

In order to enable the production of three-dimensional sapphire components using SLE in the future, the clarification of such research questions is an essential first step.


 


 


What you will do



  • You will familiarise yourself with the topic of ‘Processing transparent materials with USP laser radiation’ 

  • You will independently plan and carry out experiments on the SLE laser processing system

  • You measure the transmission with the help of an integrating sphere

  • Voltage measurement with the help of polarisation contrast microscopy is part of your area of responsibility

  • You analyse, interpret and prepare the results
